MUSICIANSHIP FOR SINGERS COURSE, POST-COVID REFRESHER COURSE
This Musicianship for Singers weekend course will refresh your singing skills as you prepare to return to group rehearsals. Interactive classes will help you develop your aural skills with fun, practical activities that will help you develop your inner hearing, sing in tune, and improve your physical coordination. Sessions will also include revision of reading music notation, exploring vocal physiology to create different moods in music, and choral improvisation to help you develop your creativity. We will also explore learning techniques in musical cognition to help you improve your aural memory, and increase your efficiency of learning in choral rehearsals. This weekend course is suitable for singers at foundation, intermediate and advanced levels, and also for singing leaders and conductors who want to learn how to integrate musicianship training and effective teaching and learning strategies into their rehearsals.
COURSES FOR CHORAL CONDUCTORS & VOCAL LEADERS
Sing for Pleasure’s courses for choral conductors and vocal leaders are delivered in two ways: technique sessions include practical demonstrations of all the key aspects of conducting, and the workshop sessions that follow give participants an enviable amount of podium time to put into practice what they have learnt. This is achieved within a relaxed and supportive learning environment. The courses include preparation, conducting gestures, singing the voice-parts, pace of rehearsal, effective teaching, enjoyment for singers and conductor alike, achieving a musical performance, and constructive analysis of both one’s own and others’ achievements. The Course Aims for the Foundation, Intermediate 1 and Intermediate 2 courses are listed on the Sing for Pleasure website (under “SfP for Conductors”). Details of the conducting repertoire to be studied will be sent out before the event.
Repertoire at Foundation level is simple. Rounds and easy part songs allow every opportunity to work through most conducting challenges without being so complicated that they get in the way of learning the skills that participants need. Repertoire at Intermediate 1 level is more challenging than at Foundation level, without being so demanding that it gets in the way of effective learning, and provides an excellent preparation for the demands of the Intermediate 2 course. Repertoire at Intermediate 2 level is more technically and musically challenging than at Intermediate 1, in a way that gives participants every opportunity to build on their existing skills. It provides an excellent preparation for the demands of the Advanced course.
CHORAL CONDUCTING MASTERCLASS
The Masterclass is intended for experienced conductors who are already working at the Sing for Pleasure Advanced level, though some places may be available for students currently at Intermediate 2 level. Manvinder Rattan will lead participants in studying a selection of challenging a capella works on the Saturday, in preparation for Sarah Tenant-Flowers joining the course as visiting guest tutor on Sunday. These Masterclass weekends are an ideal way for participants to benefit from feedback and tuition from the country’s leading choral conductors, and are an excellent opportunity to prepare for the Sing for Pleasure Summer School. Details of the works to be studied will be sent out before the event.
