Course Descriptions

The Essentials Course is for anyone who is new to Sing for Pleasure and builds an understanding of our key principles of training and introducing our core conducting techniques. Level One is for those seeking to consolidate and embed those skills learnt on the Essentials course. Level Two allows participants to foster greater confidence and self-sufficiency by broadening their gestural repertoire.

The Level 3 Masterclass is open to experienced conductors who are already working at this level. On Saturday, students will study excerpts from opera choruses, in preparation for Nic Chalmers who will join the course on Sunday. A renowned choral conductor, Nic is an expert in the field of opera and will share his perspectives on making this genre approachable and enjoyable for non-auditioned choirs.

Sing for Pleasure Conductor Training

As the largest provider of choral conductor training in the UK, Sing for Pleasure offers high-quality programmes to hundreds of choral conductors, teachers and vocal leaders nationwide (and beyond) each year. Our methodology has an emphasis on planning and preparation, effective and efficient teaching and rehearsal support through the use of expressive and economic conducting gestures in order to develop well rounded and adaptable musical leaders. We take great pride in delivering programmes that are progressive, intellectually stimulating, and tailored to meet the individual needs of each participant. These are delivered within a learning environment that is both challenging and supportive.

Level One – Consolidating
For those seeking to consolidate and build upon skills and techniques learnt on the Essentials course, embedding the fundamental Sing for Pleasure principles into their practice in order to become a clear and motivating conductor/vocal leader.

Level Two – Developing

Level Three – Enriching
For those with a Level Three recommendation. Courses for those with experience of working above Level Two (including alumni). Courses at this level are designed to broaden experience and enrich prior learning by exploring specialised aspects of conducting and vocal leadership.

Level Four – Extending (only offered at Summer School)
For those with a Level Four recommendation. This course is for those with significant conducting experience, who have completed Level Three courses and demonstrate a secure grasp of the competencies required to work at a high level. The course is designed to give experience of leading complex repertoire and large-scale choral works.

GUEST MASTERCLASS TUTOR

Nicholas Chalmers is one of the leading conductors in the UK. His energy and vision have seen the establishment of highly successful artistic and education projects and his work impacts thousands of young people each year. Nicholas is driven by a passion to bring classical music to the next generation and to ensure that people in areas of under provision have better access to training and engagement in the performing arts.

As founder Artistic Director of Nevill Holt Opera, Nic’s 10-year leadership of the company saw the creation of an exquisite new theatre in Leicestershire, which won plaudits for its acoustic design and reached the final of the RIBA Stirling prize in 2019. Nic was conductor of Northern Ireland Opera and works with all leading orchestras and opera companies. He is currently Principal Conductor of the National Youth Choir 18-25, Associate Conductor, Learning, the BBC Singers, Fernside Chair of Choral Conducting, The Royal Academy of Music, and a Senior Associate Artist of the Royal Opera House, where he made his conducting debut in autumn 2024. Nic is also a trustee of Sing for Pleasure.
