Singing Courses

ON BROADWAY COURSE (Saturday–Tuesday)
Join tutor and musicals enthusiast, Louise Ellinson, as she explores classic show tunes along with more modern musical numbers. This course is suitable for people of all experience levels and the ability to read music is not required. The course begins every day with a warm-up session followed by a morning of practical and active sessions. As well as an end-of-course performance, there will be plenty of time for informal social singing. The course continues on to the choral courses.

CHORAL COURSES (Wednesday–Saturday)
This year, our popular, half-week choral courses start at 9.45am on Wednesday morning and finish after breakfast on Saturday, with a performance on Friday evening. Join Esther Jones and the Consort Course to sing uplifting sacred and secular music on the theme of eventide. It will feature an eclectic mix of anthems and partsongs, including works by Sheena Phillips, Rheinberger and Sullivan among others – and it will be an opportunity to delve deeply into technical aspects of choral singing such as tone and blend. This course will suit you if you are an experienced or trained singer who reads music well and enjoys the demands of singing more complex music.

The whole course combines forces from Wednesday morning to perform a large choral work, accompanied by orchestra and conducted by our Advanced conducting students. An alternative, informal series of workshops (exploring different genres and themes) will be provided for those who are happier singing in a smaller, more relaxed group.

Conducting Courses

For over 60 years SfP has provided high-quality training for choral conductors and vocal leaders. In that time, we have developed courses that allow conductors to acquire an initial repertoire of effective conducting gestures and techniques and then build on that in their individual ways and according to their varying experiences. Many of our previous students have gone on to win major national and international prizes with their choirs, and some of them now teach the courses that provided them with the skills that power their success.

The Essentials Course is for anyone who is new to Sing for Pleasure and builds an understanding of our key principles of training and introducing our core conducting techniques. Level One is for those seeking to consolidate and embed those skills learnt on the Essentials course. Level Two allows participants to foster greater confidence and self-sufficiency by broadening their gestural repertoire.

The Level 3 is designed to broaden experience and enrich prior learning by exploring specialised aspects of conducting and vocal leadership.

Level 4 is ONLY available only at summer school. This intensive course provides experienced conductors with professional choral conducting experiences across a full spectrum of repertoire, including large choral/instrumental works and challenging a cappella pieces. It is open to participants who have completed Level 3 courses and demonstrate secure competency. Participants will learn to apply nuanced musical preparation, teach effectively by responding to the music, use a wide gestural language, and consistently demonstrate reflective leadership.
