‘March’ is movement 3 from Twelve Trees – a collection of pieces celebrating trees native to the British Isles by Katy Lavinia Cooper, with words by Catriona Downie.

The birch is often the first tree to bud each year, heralding spring and new beginnings. Known as the ‘Lady of the Woods’, the tree was said to give protection, and cradles were, until relatively recently, often made of its wood to protect newborns from evil spirits. Ēostre is the name of a West Germanic spring goddess. The words and melody of ‘Upon a Sunday morning’ are adapted from a folksong collected from Tom Kermode (Bradda, Isle ofMan) in 1896.

Twelve trees was commissioned to mark 60 years of Sing for Pleasure and first performed at Summer School 2024. Words by Catriona Downie and music by Katy Lavinia Cooper (O Lux Beata).  A collection of twelve pieces celebrating trees native to the British Isles and drawing inspiration from history, folklore and traditional music.
