‘November’ is movement 11 from Twelve Trees – a collection of pieces celebrating trees native to the British Isles by Katy Lavinia Cooper, with words by Catriona Downie.

An often solitary sign of life in the depths of winter, holly features in the folklore of countries the world round. In Christian lore, its leaves are said to represent Christ’s crown of thorns (and with that his resurrection), while many Celtic traditions tell of the Holly King – the personification of winter itself, ruler of the waning year. His strength is said to peak at the winter solstice, at which point the Oak King is reborn to rule over the waxing year, so perpetuating the ever-turning cycle of the seasons.

Twelve trees was commissioned to mark 60 years of Sing for Pleasure and first performed at Summer School 2024. Words by Catriona Downie and music by Katy Lavinia Cooper (O Lux Beata).  A collection of twelve pieces celebrating trees native to the British Isles and drawing inspiration from history, folklore and traditional music.
